Early Reading Audits

“The training this year from the Wandle English Hub has been amazing. It has enhanced my confidence as a leader and the process of auditing our resources and organising our new 100% decodable books has made life so much easier for everyone.” - Phonics Leader, Wandsworth

Our audits help schools to identify current good practice, highlight areas for development and plan clear, achievable next steps towards excellent phonics teaching.

An audit will offer expert advice and support for eligible schools from one of our DfE-trained Literacy Specialists.

The audit process usually lasts one day (depending on size of the school) for which eligible schools can claim £100 for the release of the Reading/Phonics Leader.

“Our children are now reading books that match their level on a daily basis and our results are already on the up! Thank you to all of the audit team and we look forward to working with the hub more in the future!” - Phonics Leader, Wandsworth

What Will It involve?

  • An initial conversation with the school’s SLT to decide on school priorities including any self-audit information.
  • Learning walk with Early Reading/Phonics leader & SLT to review phonics and reading teaching.
  • Considering early reading learning environments and resourcing.
  • Discussion with the team on current strengths and areas of development.
  • Agreeing an action plan making clear actionable next steps to improve the provision.
  • Follow up call post-audit to review progress on the action plan.

Self-Audits

Following the impact of COVID-19, the DfE has shared guidance to help schools complete a self-audit of their early reading provision. Please find the guidance document here

Once a school has established the gaps in their provision, Wandle English Hub (and the other 33 nationwide English Hubs) are here to provide assistance. This can be a good first step before requesting an audit visit.
